What to see
The compact centre is divided by Haulover Creek, crossed by the hand-cranked Swing Bridge. Nearby, the Museum of Belize in the old colonial jail covers Maya and colonial history, and St John's Cathedral is one of the oldest Anglican churches in Central America. On the road west, the Belize Zoo keeps native animals, including jaguars and tapirs, most of them rescued.
Transport hub
The international airport is about 16 km north-west of the centre; taxis take about 25 minutes. Domestic flights also leave from the municipal airport near the centre. Water taxis to the cayes leave from terminals near the Swing Bridge. See Belize airports and the water taxi map.
As in any city, take care at night; use taxis rather than walking after dark.
