Where to go

The reef lies close to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, which makes the north the easiest place for snorkelling: Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley are short boat rides away. Further out, the three atolls, Turneffe, Lighthouse Reef with the Great Blue Hole, and Glover's Reef, have walls and clear water for divers.

In the south, the reef is further from the coast. Trips from Hopkins, Dangriga and Placencia go to South Water Caye, Laughing Bird Caye and the Silk Cayes.

Protecting the reef

Most reef sites are marine reserves with small entry fees. Use reef-safe sunscreen, do not touch or stand on coral, and go with licensed guides.
