What to do

The barrier reef runs just off the east coast of the island. The classic trip is to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a channel through the reef full of fish and coral, combined with Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and stingrays gather. Dive shops in San Pedro also run trips to the outer atolls and the Great Blue Hole.

San Pedro is a lively town of colourful wooden buildings, beach bars and restaurants. North of town, a bridge leads to quieter resorts and beaches.

Getting there and around

Flights from Belize City take 15 to 20 minutes, and water taxis about 1.5 hours, usually stopping at Caye Caulker. On the island, most visitors rent a golf cart or a bike. See the water taxi map.
