The site

At its height, Caracol was home to many thousands of people and defeated the city of Tikal in the 6th century. The excavated centre includes plazas, ball courts and Caana, the "Sky Palace", about 43 metres high. The site lies in the Chiquibul Forest, and birds, howler monkeys and sometimes ocellated turkeys are seen.

Getting there

Most visitors join a full-day tour from San Ignacio. The road crosses the Mountain Pine Ridge, and tours usually stop at the Rio On Pools or Rio Frio Cave on the way back. Driving yourself is possible in dry weather with a four-wheel drive; check current road and security advice before you go.
