The site
Altun Ha was a trading centre between the coast and inland cities. Its Temple of the Masonry Altars, the image on the label of Belikin beer, is the best-known building. Archaeologists found a large carved jade head of the Maya sun god here, now one of Belize's national treasures.
Visiting
The site is compact and takes one to two hours. It is popular as a half-day trip from Belize City and as a shore excursion from cruise ships, so arrive early or late. Tours often combine Altun Ha with cave tubing or the Belize Zoo.
